BASIC SCIENCE LECTURES

Chapter 1st

MUSCLES OF RESPIRATION
H M Krishna

Key points

Surgery affects respiratory pump muscles leading to atelectasis, decreased FRC, decreased vital capacity and postoperative pulmonary complication.

Upper airway muscles are generally more affected by sleep, anesthetics and sedatives than respiratory pump muscle.

Postoperative delirium, stroke, hypoglycemia, adrenal insufficiency, hypothyroidism affect respiratory arousal.

Postoperative residual curarization may cause negative pressure pulmonary edema, respiratory failure and increased aspiration risk secondary to impaired swallow reflexes.

Strategies to reduce postoperative pulmonary complications by preserving respiratory muscle function should be followed
